BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1981, Kerry Hugins was deeply influenced by her international upbringing. As the daughter of American diplomats, she spent her formative years overseas, at a time when the world felt much larger and social media didn’t exist to maintain constant connection. This early experience of displacement and cross-cultural observation continues to inform her practice, shaping her interest in memory, environment, and collective experience. Kerry Hugins is an interdisciplinary artist whose work spans installation, community-engaged projects, and ecological research, with a particular focus on plant-human relations and care structures. Through participatory and site-responsive works, she explores how humans inhabit and shape their surroundings, creating immersive experiences that invite reflection on embodiment and environmental interconnection.
Hugins has showcased her art in numerous group exhibitions across the United States and completed a residency at Ceramica Suro in Guadalajara Mexico, at El Sur in Mexico City and most recently Ghost Ranch in Abiquiú, New Mexico. She earned her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. She is also a mother and a new death doula, roles that inform her long-term engagement with care, transition, and lived experience She lives in Austin, TX with her family. Hugins is fluent in English and Spanish, with working knowledge of German.
